Keto-Neato: How The Keto Diet Helped Me

K-E-T-O!!! Today I want to discuss this new "fad diet". As stated in a previous blog post,

I began the Ketogenic diet back in July of 2018 and I haven't looked back since! I had been eating clean and watching my portions but the weight was not coming off at all. From the months of January to June I had only lost a total of 10-12 lbs. Whereas within my first two weeks of keto I had lost 5 lbs. The weight began falling off at a steady rate from that point on, along with my workout schedule (5 days per week). I have now since then increased my carbohydrate intake from 40 grams per day to 60-80 grams per day and I’m still able to maintain my weight and tone my body. Since having made the decision of choosing keto I got a lot of negative backlash from it. People told me I would would get the "keto flu", high cholesterol, migraines/headaches, and possibly die....and the list could go on. Let me tell you why I didn't listen.

What Is The Ketogenic Diet?

It is a high-fat, moderate protein, low-carb diet. The diet forces the body to burn fats instead of carbohydrates. The reduced intake of carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called "ketosis". In medicine it primarily benefits those who suffer from diabetes, cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. Consult With Your Doc or Nutritionist

Always talk with a health care professional before jumping head first into a new diet. You want to be sure your health is in order for what you are wanting to achieve. Say for instance if you suffer from kidney disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure every diet out there may not be for you specifically and you may have a restriction on what foods you can consume. Before setting an appointment be sure to do your research on the diet and/or lifestyle change you plan to incorporate into you daily routine. Set a realistic goal, make a food diary, and discuss how you plan to execute your goal.

Know Your Body

Everyone is different...I cannot stress this enough! Being in tune with your body is highly important in order to know what works for YOU! What may work better for someone else may not work for you, and then again it possibly could. I did strenuous research before starting my "keto journey" and consulted with my doctor as well. What I found was that I am a mixture of a mesomorph and endomorph body type.

There are 3 body types:

  • Ectomorph- a person with a lean and delicate body build. (thin build, difficulty gaining fat and muscle, fast metabolism)

  • Endomorph- a person with a soft round build of body and a high proportion of fat tissue. (round build, difficulty losing fat, slow metabolism)

  • Mesomorph- a person with a compact and muscular body build. (athletic build, gains fat and muscle easily as well as loses it, average metabolism)

Knowing my body type helped me pin point my strengths and weaknesses. It helped me figure out which workout program was best for me and what diet would best fit me. If you really want to go in depth you can also figure your "metabolic type" or the portions of proteins, carbs, and fats you should consume. Myths Surrounding Keto

  • You go into ketoacidosis

  • You can have a ton of butter, bacon, and cheese

  • You can't eat fruit

  • It's a high protein diet

  • You can have any type of fat

Be sure you know what you are getting yourself into and do your research on any fad diet that you are wanting to try out. I'm no doctor or nutritionist and I can only speak for myself and from my experience with the diet.
