As the holiday season steadily approaches and the days get shorter and the air is more crisp and cool, also comes comfort foods and cozying up on the couch! When it's cold out people tend to stay close to home in the warmth and nuzzle up with their significant others, pets, or if you just so happen to be single like me, you grab your favorite fuzzy socks, a throw blanket and binge watch some Netflix. Naturally, cold weather makes you want to go into hibernation mode and chow down on snacks all day long. To make matters worse, you have to battle through Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years....yikes! Me personally, throughout the calendar year deep down in my heart (aka my gut) I'm patiently waiting for Thanksgiving to roll around so I can indulge in the immaculate spread and stuff myself to oblivion! In all actuality I now have self control and I consume a healthy amount without overdoing it and at the same time stay consistent with working out. Here are some tips that helped me stay fit and motivated throughout the winter months.
Do not..I repeat... DO NOT...CHANGE YOUR ROUTINE. Yes the winter months can be harsh and you feel like you have zero energy to absolutely do nothing. It's easy to get distracted and lose track of time during the holidays with all of the endless errands you have to run. Yes you will be busy buying gifts, entertaining house guests/family, cooking, and cleaning. Remember to set some time aside for yourself just like you would in your everyday routine. Making a schedule and planning your day out will make sure things go as planned, and make sure to give yourself an ample amount of time in between each task to prevent unnecessary rushing.
Setting a "winter goal" is another effective way to stay the course and remain motivated. Statistics show that people who write down their goals will more than likely follow through and achieve their goal than those who don't. Be sure to make a realistic goal that won't be extremely challenging. Here are some examples:
Lose 5 lbs in 2 weeks
Complete a workout challenge
Lose 10 lbs by the end of the month
Make sure to track your progress, this will ensure that you stay motivated to reach the goal you have set in place. Once you have reached that goal, set another and achieve it. There is nothing better than a little friendly competition with yourself, you will feel so accomplished and fulfilled.
When it's freezing out and you're snowed in let’s face it...you're going to get bored and then for no apparent reason you're going to get hungry. I know myslef well enough to know that when boredum stirkes I'm going back and forth, in and out of the kitchen looking for something to eat. No matter if I had just eaten 45 minutes to an hour ago, I'm on the prowl! In order to tackle the "snack attacks" head on without any regrets, you must have healthier snack alternatives on hand. I like to opt for cucumbers with vinegar, oil, salt and pepper or I may have a chocolate rice cake and spread on some almond butter when I'm craving something sweet. If you're having trouble trying to figure out better snack options I highly suggest browsing through Pinterest, they have some awesome and endless snack combos to choose from!
When the weather outside is frightful, you surly don’t want to risk driving to the gym. When in doubt choose a home workout! It’s great to have a few of them pre planned so you don’t have to sit and think about a workout you’re going to do. Sitting and thinking soon turns into stalling and then the whole idea itself fades into a distant memory. If you’re worried about needing equipment worry no more, body weight workouts and HIIT workouts make for the best in home workouts. As I mentioned earlier Pinterest is the place to go when you need some impromptu inspiration.
I hope this post helps you battle through this coming winter like a pro! Comment and let me know how you plan on keeping the winter fluff at bay!
