When it’s that “time of the month” I’m sure working out is the last thing on a woman’s mind (I am definitely on of those women). Curling up in your bed or on the couch with a blanket and all of your favorite snacks may seem ideal but let me convince you to “go with the flow” and continue your routine schedule of working out!
How beneficial can it be???
Even though you may not be feeling quite yourself, exercising can be beneficial and may alleviate some of those pesky period symptoms. For starters working out increases the production of endorphins. Endorphin is a natural opiate that is secreted by the pituitary gland which reduces pain and boost your mood! Studies show that when you workout during the first two weeks of your menstrual cycle your exercise performance actually enhances. This is because estrogen and progesterone (lady hormones) are at an all time low. Your body temperature is actually lower and with the drop in hormones it increases the amount of time it takes for your body to become fatigued.
What workout is best?
"HIIT" workouts (High Intensity Interval Training) or cardio are the options to go with. These types of workouts aid in the release of endorphins and lots of it for that matter! If your period pain is unbearable, sticking to a lighter workout routine would best fit (i.e. walking, yoga, stretching, swimming). Yes you may be experiencing discomfort and rather than laying up with your body pillow and wallowing in pain these light exercises will bring forth some comfort. Make sure to drink plenty fluids (water not wine) to replenish what you have lost and also a heating pad before your workout.
With all of that being said, get out of bed, gear up, and lace up those running shoes and get to it! Getting to the gym is the first part and kudos to you for getting that far! The rest is history!
