Fit Guide: To Have a Workout Routine or Not to Have a Workout Routine?

Writer's picture: Elle JanaeElle Janae

Everyone has a routine whether it be a day to day routine, clean up routine, meditation routine, etc. I myself am very particular about my every day routines, I usually don't stray far away from the norm (because I'm weird like that). However when it comes to my workout routine I like to switch it up and surprise myself. I have not always been this way by any means, when I got back on track and got in the gym I had a usual Mon-Fri routine.

  • Monday - Bicep/Triceps

  • Tuesday - Leg/ Back

  • Wednesday - Cardio

  • Thursday - Shoulder/ Chest

  • Friday - Leg/ Back (always work the large muscle groups at least twice per week)

  • Weekends (rest days)

I would repeat this week after week....BORING right?! My routine started to get old real quick and I could tell because my body stopped responding. Muscles have memory and mine were fed up with the usual and wanted more. Each day I go to the gym with no set plan in mind other than "I'm going to get it in"! I like to surprise myself or shock my body with something different. My workouts do always start the same with a five minute run on the treadmill (1.5 incline/ 6.0 speed and gradually increase speed up to 7.0) and at least 10 minutes of stretching. I usually choose between these options and then build my workout from there.

  • Push day (exercises involving pushing i.e.; push ups, dips, upright rows)

  • Pull day (exercises involving pulling i.e.; pull ups, dumbbell curls, barbell rows)

  • Full body

  • Quads, Hamstrings, Glutes

  • HIIT (high intensity interval training)

  • Plyometric circuit (repeated rapid movements i.e.; jumping/rebounding)

From week to week I switch up the order in which I do these various exercises, so there is no set day for each workout. With every workout that I do I always incorporate an ab session at the end. I'm slightly obsessed with having a six pack (currently I have 3 and a half), but as they say "abs are made in the kitchen". I'm sure I need to tweak my diet in order to get the other half to come around, but we'll save that for another day.
