5 Tips on How To Stay Fit While Traveling

Writer's picture: Elle JanaeElle Janae

Ahhhh yes vacation time! Time to kick your feet up in a new city or country, relax and decompress from “work drama”, go out and sight see, do a little retail therapy, etc. You could even workout since you have the free time to do so! But..... there is always that constant struggle to decide whether or not you’ll workout while you’re on vacation. As we all know “vacation” and “workout” really don't go in the same sentence. However, here are 5 easy tips on how to make those two fit into one sentence.

Pack Accordingly

Before stuffing your carry-on or suitcase with a months worth of clothes (that you more than likely will not wear during the trip) make sure to pack your gym attire. Planning ahead and packing your workout necessities will help you get mentally prepared and committed to working out while you're away. You don't have to over do it, one pair of sneakers, 2-3 workout pants and tops and that's it, you still have space for all the other hundred items you're going to force into your suitcase.

Find a Nearby Gym

Wherever you are staying there's a 50/50 chance a gym is nearby or the hotel that you are staying in may have a gym as well. If you are planning on working out while away make sure the amenities in the hotel and the surrounding area meet your needs during your booking process. More than likely hotels have gyms/pools in them which makes the task much more simplified. If you happen to be staying in an Airbnb and there is no gym available take a look at the next tip!

Take Advantage of Nature

No gym no problem! If there happens to be no gym in the area and where you are staying doesn't offer gym facilities, there is always the great outdoors. You can go for brisk jog/run, hike, do a no equipment needed workout routine (I find all of mine on Pinterest), or if you have some equipment with you, find a nice spot to set up and get your 30-45 minutes of moderate exercise done. Keep in mind to keep it simple, you do not have to do an extravagant workout while you're on vacation.

Make Healthy Choices

A new place means new temptation, and by temptation I mean "food". The last thing we are worried about while we are traveling is watching what we consume. Yes, go ahead and enjoy those delectable delicacies, just try not to over indulge. Control your portions and if you choose to do so, make healthier choices. There is nothing wrong with straying away from your "diet" or "eating habits" so don't beat yourself up over it. Also, be sure to stay hydrated as well, along with food comes beverages, and some of those are adult beverages.

Time Management

Even though it may seem you have all the time in the world it's always best to have a set time of when you'll be working out. If you have an itinerary in place find an open time slot that you can comfortably fit 30 to 45 minutes of some sort of physical activity in. Usually, I opt-in for morning workouts while I'm traveling, if you're not an early bird try aiming for late morning or afternoon.

Happy Traveling!
